What is the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam (CLF-C02)?

The AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) exam has 65 questions (50 scored, 15 unscored), lasts 90 minutes and costs USD 100. You need a scaled score of 700 out of 1,000 to pass. It covers four domains: cloud technology and services, security and compliance, cloud concepts, and billing, pricing and support. You can take it at a Pearson VUE centre or online from home, and the certification stays valid for three years. For a beginner in Kerala, about four weeks of structured study is enough to pass.

AWS Cloud Practitioner exam: the starting point for cloud careers in Kerala

The AWS Cloud Practitioner exam is the first certification most beginners in Kerala take on the way to a cloud career, whether they are final-year students in Trivandrum, working professionals in Kochi or non-IT graduates testing whether cloud suits them. It does not require coding, it covers the vocabulary that every later AWS exam assumes, and it gives you a credential on your resume within a month of starting.

Thinking of starting? See the AWS and DevOps course page.

This guide covers everything you need to plan the exam: the format and fee, the four domains and how much each one counts, how to book a seat or sit it online from Kerala, a four-week preparation plan that works alongside a job or college, and an honest view of what the certificate does and does not do for your job search.

CLF-C02 exam pattern: questions, duration, fee and passing score

Quick answer: CLF-C02 has 65 questions (50 scored and 15 unscored), runs for 90 minutes, costs USD 100 and needs a scaled score of 700 on a 100 to 1,000 scale. It is delivered at Pearson VUE test centres or online with a proctor, and the certification is valid for three years.

A few details matter in practice. The 15 unscored questions are mixed in with the scored ones and you cannot tell them apart, so treat every question as if it counts. Multiple-response questions tell you how many options to pick; read that instruction. And 90 minutes for 65 questions leaves a little under a minute and a half each, which is comfortable if you have done timed practice and tight if you have not.

AWS Cloud Practitioner syllabus: the four domains

Quick answer: The syllabus has four domains. Cloud Technology and Services carries 34 percent, Security and Compliance 30 percent, Cloud Concepts 24 percent and Billing, Pricing and Support 12 percent. Scoring is compensatory, so you only need to pass overall, not each domain.

DomainWeight
Cloud Technology and Services34%
Security and Compliance30%
Cloud Concepts24%
Billing, Pricing and Support12%

What each domain covers in plain terms:

  • Cloud Technology and Services. The core services and what they are for: compute (EC2, Lambda), storage (S3, EBS), databases (RDS, DynamoDB), networking (VPC, Route 53, CloudFront) and the deployment and monitoring tools around them. This is the largest domain and the one beginners spend most time on.
  • Security and Compliance. The shared responsibility model, IAM users, groups, roles and policies, encryption basics and the security services such as GuardDuty, Shield and WAF. Expect several questions on who is responsible for what.
  • Cloud Concepts. Why organisations move to cloud, the AWS global infrastructure of regions, availability zones and edge locations, and the Well-Architected Framework pillars.
  • Billing, Pricing and Support. On-demand versus reserved versus spot pricing, the free tier, cost tools such as Cost Explorer and Budgets, and the differences between the support plans.

Because scoring is compensatory, a weak area in billing can be offset by a strong score in services and security. Plan your revision around the weights rather than giving every topic equal time.

Who should take CLF-C02: AWS certification for beginners

Quick answer: CLF-C02 suits anyone new to AWS: students, non-IT graduates, project managers and sales staff who work with cloud teams, and IT professionals from other areas who want a structured first step. If you already have hands-on AWS experience, you may go straight to the Solutions Architect Associate.

In Kerala, four groups take this exam most often:

  • Final-year students and fresh graduates who want a recognised credential before campus placements or their first job search.
  • Career switchers from support, testing, networking or non-IT roles who need to prove they understand cloud fundamentals before an employer will consider them.
  • Non-technical professionals in finance, procurement or project management who deal with cloud bills and architects every week.
  • Working engineers who want the foundation certificate on record before the associate exams.

The exam is deliberately broad rather than deep. That is a strength for beginners, because it forces you to learn the whole map of AWS before specialising. It is also why the certificate on its own is not a job ticket, which we come back to below. If you want the exam preparation inside a longer, hands-on programme, the AWS and DevOps track at Cokonet Academy covers it in the first weeks; you can compare it with the other cloud options under all courses.

How to book and take the exam from Kerala

Quick answer: Create an AWS Certification account, choose CLF-C02, pick either a Pearson VUE test centre or the online proctored option, select a date and pay the USD 100 fee. Carry valid government ID on the day, or prepare a quiet, clear desk and a working webcam for the online version.

The test centre route is the simpler one if you are near a Pearson VUE location. You arrive early, store your belongings, show your ID and sit the exam on their machine. The online route lets you sit the exam from home in Kerala at a time that suits you, including early mornings and late evenings, but it comes with strict rules: a private room, no papers or second screens, a webcam check of the room, and a proctor who can end the session if someone walks in. A stable internet connection is not optional.

Either way, book your date before you feel ready. A fixed date four weeks out turns a vague intention into a study plan, and most candidates who postpone booking until they feel fully prepared end up delaying by months.

A 4-week prep plan for the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam

Quick answer: Spend week one on cloud concepts and the shared responsibility model, week two on the core services, week three on IAM, security, pricing and support plans, and week four on two full timed practice tests and revision of weak areas.

  1. Week 1: Cloud concepts, global infrastructure, the shared responsibility model. Learn what regions, availability zones and edge locations are and why they matter. Be able to explain which security tasks AWS handles and which the customer handles for EC2, RDS and S3. Create a free-tier account and click through the console so the names become familiar.
  2. Week 2: Core services: EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, VPC. For each service, learn what it does, one typical use case and how it is priced. Launch an EC2 instance, upload a file to S3 and delete both before you finish, so you have touched the real thing rather than only reading about it.
  3. Week 3: IAM, security services, pricing models and support plans. Work through users, groups, roles and policies until the differences are automatic. Learn the pricing models and the free tier, and memorise the support plan tiers, because those questions are easy marks.
  4. Week 4: Two full timed practice tests, then revise weak areas. Sit each test in one 90-minute block without pausing. Review every wrong answer and every lucky guess, note the domain, and spend the remaining days on the domains where you lost the most marks.

Ninety minutes a day on weekdays and a longer session at the weekend is enough for this plan. Working professionals in Kochi and Trivandrum usually run it alongside their job; students can compress it into two weeks during a break.

After CLF-C02: is the Cloud Practitioner certificate enough to get a job?

Quick answer: Not on its own. Cloud Practitioner proves you understand the fundamentals, but most employers hiring for cloud roles also want the AWS Solutions Architect Associate and evidence of hands-on work, such as a project you deployed yourself.

Think of CLF-C02 as the first of three steps:

  • Step 1: Cloud Practitioner. The vocabulary and the map of AWS. Done in about a month.
  • Step 2: Solutions Architect Associate. The exam recruiters actually search for when they screen resumes for cloud roles.
  • Step 3: Hands-on projects. A deployed web application, an automated pipeline or infrastructure written as code. This is what gets you through the technical interview.

The AWS certification path for beginners lays out the full sequence. If you would rather follow it with a trainer, labs and placement support, the AWS and DevOps course takes you from Cloud Practitioner level to deploying real workloads with Docker, CI/CD and Terraform.
