Data analyst resume format for freshers: one page, in this order
Need projects worth putting on the page? The Data Analytics course in Kerala ends with three capstones on real Indian business datasets, built for exactly this.
Quick answer: Use a single-column, one-page layout in this order: header with links, summary, skills, projects, education, certifications. Experience comes before projects only if you have relevant internships. Save as PDF with your name in the file name.
Recruiters and applicant tracking systems both prefer plain structure. Two-column templates with icons and skill bars look modern but often break in ATS parsing, and skill bars invite the question "what does 70 percent SQL mean?". Use a readable font at 10.5 to 11 points, consistent headings and 1.5 cm margins. Your name, phone, email, city, LinkedIn and portfolio link go at the top; a photo is not needed for analyst roles in India and can trigger bias.
Keep it to one page. A fresher with two pages signals padding. If a project is strong enough to need more space, that detail belongs in the portfolio the resume links to, not on the resume itself.
Skills for a data analyst resume: what recruiters scan for
Quick answer: Group skills by tool family and list only what you can demonstrate in an interview: Excel (pivot tables, Power Query, lookups), SQL (joins, aggregations, window functions), visualisation (Power BI or Tableau, DAX), Python (pandas, matplotlib) and statistics (descriptive stats, hypothesis testing basics). Add domain knowledge if you have it, such as accounting, retail or healthcare.
A recruiter searching a job portal filters by keywords, so the exact tool names matter: write "Power BI" and "DAX", not "BI tools". A hiring manager then checks whether the list is believable. Ten tools on a fresher CV reads as a course syllabus; six tools each backed by a project reads as competence.
- Excel: pivot tables, Power Query, XLOOKUP and INDEX MATCH, conditional formatting, data validation, dashboards
- SQL: SELECT with joins, GROUP BY, subqueries, CTEs, window functions (ROW_NUMBER, RANK, LAG), on MySQL, PostgreSQL or SQL Server
- Visualisation: Power BI (data model, DAX measures, bookmarks, publishing) or Tableau
- Python: pandas for cleaning and joins, matplotlib or seaborn for charts, Jupyter notebooks
- Statistics: mean, median, variance, distributions, correlation, A/B test basics
- Working skills: data cleaning, documentation, presenting findings, Git basics, AI assistants for query drafting and code review
How to write data analyst projects on a fresher resume
Quick answer: Write each project in three or four lines: the business question, the dataset and its size, what you did with which tools, and the result or insight with a number. Link the dashboard, notebook or GitHub repository. Two strong projects beat five weak ones.
Projects are the experience section of a fresher resume, so write them with verbs and numbers, the way a working analyst would describe a deliverable.
Weak: "Created a sales dashboard in Power BI using a Kaggle dataset."
Strong: "Analysed 18 months of retail sales (52,000 rows, 4 stores) to find why Q3 margins fell. Cleaned and modelled the data in Power Query, wrote DAX measures for margin by category, and built a 3-page Power BI report. Found that two discount campaigns drove 70 percent of the margin loss; recommended a cap on stacked discounts."
Good project themes for Kerala freshers, because employers here recognise them: retail or supermarket sales analysis, hospital appointment no-shows, bank loan default exploration, Kochi or Trivandrum property price analysis, e-commerce customer segmentation with RFM, and a public dataset from data.gov.in such as Kerala tourism arrivals or crop yields. Our data analyst course guide explains how the capstones are chosen.
Data analyst resume summary examples for freshers
Quick answer: A summary is two or three lines: who you are, the tools you use, one proof point and the role you want. Do not call it an objective and do not start with "seeking a challenging position".
Commerce graduate: "B.Com graduate with hands-on training in Excel, SQL and Power BI. Built three analytics projects including a receivables ageing dashboard that cut a mock month-end report from two days to twenty minutes. Looking for a junior data analyst role in finance or retail analytics in Kochi."
Engineering graduate: "B.Tech (Mechanical) graduate who moved into analytics through a four-month SQL, Python and Power BI programme. Portfolio includes a production downtime analysis on 40,000 machine logs that identified the two shifts responsible for 60 percent of stoppages. Seeking a data analyst role in manufacturing or supply chain."
Career switcher: "Former accounts executive with four years in Tally and MIS reporting, now trained in SQL, Power BI and Python. Rebuilt my previous employer's monthly MIS as an automated Power BI model as a capstone project. Targeting a business or data analyst role where domain knowledge in finance adds value."
Each example names tools, gives a number and states a target. Adjust the domain to the job you are applying for; a summary tuned to the posting beats a generic one every time.
Education, certifications and what to do about a low percentage
Quick answer: List your degree, college, year and percentage or CGPA if it is 60 percent or above; if it is lower, list the degree without the number and let the projects speak. Add relevant coursework (statistics, economics, operations research) and certifications with the issuing body and year.
Certifications that Kerala and Bengaluru employers recognise on a fresher data analyst CV include Microsoft PL-300 (Power BI Data Analyst Associate), the Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate, and an institute completion certificate when the institute is known to recruiters. Put the certificate name exactly as issued. Do not list a course you are "currently pursuing" unless you can show the work so far.
Many good analysts in Kochi came from arts, science and commerce streams with average marks. What separated them was a portfolio that answered a business question properly. If your percentage is low, make the projects section the longest on the page. You can read how our learners build those projects on the Cokonet Academy website and compare the analytics track with Power BI and Python options on the all courses page.
Data analyst resume mistakes that get freshers rejected
Quick answer: The common rejections are: no portfolio link, skills listed without projects, two pages, a long objective, a course certificate presented as experience, spelling errors in tool names (PowerBI, Mysql), and one generic CV sent to every opening.
- Listing the course as experience. A course is education. The projects you did in it are experience; write them that way.
- No numbers. Row counts, time saved, percentage change. If you cannot quantify, describe the decision your analysis supported.
- No link. A recruiter who cannot click to your dashboard will assume it does not exist. Publish to Power BI public web, Tableau Public or GitHub.
- Keyword stuffing. A skills section with 25 items looks like a search-engine trick and gets no credit in the interview.
- Wrong file. Send a PDF named Firstname-Lastname-Data-Analyst.pdf, not Resume_final_v3.docx.
- Unexplained gaps. If you took a year to switch careers, one line in the summary ("completed a full-time analytics programme in 2026") removes the question.

Tailoring your data analyst CV for Kerala and Bengaluru job postings
Quick answer: Read the posting, note the three tools and the domain it repeats, and make sure those words appear in your summary, skills and at least one project. A ten-minute edit per application roughly doubles response rates compared with a single generic CV.
Fresher analyst postings in Kochi and Trivandrum cluster into a few types. Finance and MIS roles at banks, NBFCs and accounting firms ask for Excel, SQL and reporting discipline. Product and e-commerce roles ask for SQL, Python and experiment basics. Healthcare and retail groups ask for Power BI and the ability to present to non-technical managers. Bengaluru product companies add a SQL test and a case study. Name the matching domain in your summary and lead with the matching project.
Public salary ranges for fresher data analysts in India sit around Rs 3 to 5 lakh a year, with Kerala offers toward the lower end and Bengaluru product roles higher.
