DevOps course syllabus at a glance
Comparing courses? The DevOps on AWS course page shows the full module list, projects and the next batch dates.
Quick answer: The syllabus below is the sequence that works: foundations first, then build automation, containers, infrastructure as code, cloud and finally observability and projects. Each module builds on the last, so a course that teaches Kubernetes in week two is skipping steps.
| Module | Core topics | Approx. hours |
|---|
| 1. Linux and scripting | File system, permissions, processes, bash scripting, networking basics | 24 |
| 2. Git and collaboration | Branching, merging, pull requests, GitHub or GitLab workflows | 12 |
| 3. AWS core | IAM, EC2, VPC, S3, RDS, load balancers, auto scaling, cost basics | 40 |
| 4. CI/CD | Jenkins pipelines, GitHub Actions, artefact management, testing stages | 28 |
| 5. Docker | Images, Dockerfiles, volumes, networks, Docker Compose, registries | 20 |
| 6. Kubernetes | Pods, deployments, services, ingress, config, Helm, EKS | 32 |
| 7. Infrastructure as code | Terraform, CloudFormation, state, modules | 24 |
| 8. Configuration management | Ansible playbooks, roles, inventories | 12 |
| 9. Monitoring and logging | CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK basics, alerting | 16 |
| 10. Projects and interview prep | Two end-to-end deployments, resume, mock interviews | 16 |
Hours are indicative and match the roughly 224-hour DevOps on AWS track at Cokonet; a course that promises the same ground in 40 hours is teaching slides, not skills.
Module 1 to 2: Linux, scripting and Git
Quick answer: Linux is the floor of DevOps. You need to be comfortable in the terminal, understand permissions, services, logs and networking commands, and write small bash scripts. Git comes next, because every pipeline starts from a repository and every interview includes a branching question.
Freshers who skip this foundation struggle later: a Jenkins failure is usually a Linux permission or path problem, and a Docker build that will not run is often a shell issue inside the container.
Module 3: AWS core services for DevOps
Quick answer: A DevOps syllabus must include IAM, EC2, VPC, S3, RDS, load balancing and auto scaling, because pipelines deploy into this infrastructure. Learn to build a two-tier application environment by hand before automating it with Terraform.

Module 4 to 6: CI/CD, Docker and Kubernetes
Quick answer: This is the heart of the course. You should leave it able to write a Jenkins or GitHub Actions pipeline that tests, builds a Docker image, pushes it to a registry and deploys it to a Kubernetes cluster such as Amazon EKS, with rollbacks.
- CI/CD: multi-stage pipelines, secrets, artefacts, quality gates
- Docker: small images, multi-stage builds, Compose for local stacks
- Kubernetes: deployments, services, ingress, ConfigMaps and Secrets, Helm charts, EKS specifics

Module 7 to 9: Terraform, Ansible and monitoring
Quick answer: Infrastructure as code (Terraform and CloudFormation) and configuration management (Ansible) turn the manual AWS build from module 3 into repeatable code. Monitoring with CloudWatch, Prometheus and Grafana closes the loop so you can see what your pipeline deployed.
Recruiters increasingly ask Terraform questions even for junior roles, because most companies have moved past click-ops.

DevOps projects that get freshers hired
Quick answer: Two projects are enough if they are complete: a web application deployed through a CI/CD pipeline to EKS with monitoring, and an infrastructure-as-code project that builds a full AWS environment with Terraform. Put both on GitHub with a README that explains the architecture.
Interviewers want to hear how you debugged a failed deployment, not that you completed a lab.
DevOps course duration and format
Quick answer: A complete DevOps course takes 4 to 5 months, around 224 hours, in weekday or weekend batches. Shorter 6 to 8 week courses cover tools at an overview level and suit people already working in IT operations.
Weekend batches spread the same hours over 5 to 6 months. Whichever format you choose, keep a running lab environment: a personal AWS free-tier account and a GitHub repository where every exercise lands as a commit. By the end of the course that repository is your portfolio.

DevOps jobs and salary in Kerala after the course
Quick answer: Entry roles are Junior DevOps Engineer, Cloud Support Engineer and Build and Release Engineer at Infopark, Technopark and Bengaluru companies, plus remote roles. Per our AWS DevOps salary guide, freshers typically start at about Rs 4 to 7 lakh a year, rising to Rs 7 to 14 lakh by years 2 to 3.
How to compare DevOps courses: an 8-point checklist
Put any DevOps course syllabus through these eight questions before you pay:
- Does it start with Linux and scripting, or jump straight to tools?
- Is there a real cloud account with hands-on AWS labs, or only a demo from the trainer's screen?
- Do you build at least one full CI/CD pipeline yourself, end to end?
- Is Kubernetes taught on a managed service such as EKS, with ingress and Helm, not just minikube?
- Is Terraform included, with state management and modules?
- Is monitoring covered with Prometheus and Grafana or CloudWatch dashboards and alerts?
- Are there two complete projects you can show on GitHub?
- Does the trainer currently work in a DevOps or platform role?
Six or more yes answers is a strong course. Fewer than four and you are buying a tools overview that interviews will expose. Our guide to what an AWS course should include applies the same test to cloud courses.
