- Targeting a specific MNC or analytics consultancy: check their stack first. If their job descriptions say Tableau, learn Tableau — a specific employer’s requirement beats general statistics every time.
- Working professional whose company already uses one: learn that one. Internal moves are the easiest analyst jobs to land.
- Visualisation-obsessed and portfolio-driven: Tableau, whose Public gallery is a genuine showcase venue.

Can you learn both? Yes — but in sequence
The good news buried under the “versus” framing: this is not a lifetime commitment. The hard skills — data modelling, writing calculations, choosing the right chart, designing dashboards people actually use — live underneath both tools and transfer almost entirely. An analyst who is genuinely strong in Power BI can produce competent Tableau work after a few focused weekends, and vice versa.
The mistake is studying both simultaneously as a beginner: you get two half-skills that interview poorly instead of one that interviews well.
