SAP FICO interview questions and answers: what freshers actually get asked.

We collect the SAP FICO interview questions our learners face at real interviews in Kerala, metro India and the Gulf. Here are the ones that come up again and again in 2026 — with answers you can give in your own words.

What is asked in an SAP FICO interview?

SAP FICO interviews for freshers concentrate on fundamentals: company code, chart of accounts and fiscal year variant; configuration objects like posting keys, document types and field status groups; and the integration points where FI meets MM (goods receipt, invoice verification) and SD (billing). Expect two or three scenario questions that test reasoning, not memory. Concept clarity plus hands-on server practice is what gets freshers through.

How SAP FICO interviews really work for freshers

Most SAP FICO interviews for entry-level roles follow the same arc: ten minutes on your background and training, twenty minutes of concept questions, and a few scenarios to see how you think. Interviewers know a fresher has no project history — what they are checking is whether your SAP FICO course gave you real system time or just slides. The questions below are the ones our placement team hears back about most often. Learn the ideas, not the wording; an interviewer can tell a memorised answer from a understood one within seconds. And if you are still deciding whether this module is the right bet at all, read is SAP FICO a good career first.

The basics: company code, chart of accounts, fiscal year

1. What is a company code?

The smallest organisational unit in FI for which a complete, self-contained set of accounts can be drawn up — effectively one legal entity. Balance sheet and profit-and-loss statements are produced at company code level. It is a four-character key, and all FI postings happen inside one.

2. What is a chart of accounts, and what types exist?

The organised list of all G/L accounts a company code uses. SAP has three types: the operating chart of accounts used for daily postings, the group chart for consolidated corporate reporting, and the country-specific chart for local legal requirements. One operating chart can be assigned to many company codes.

3. What is a fiscal year variant?

It defines how the financial year is arranged into posting periods — normally 12 regular periods plus up to 4 special periods for closing adjustments. India commonly uses V3 (April to March, year-dependent). The variant is assigned to the company code.

4. What is a posting period variant?

It controls which periods are open for posting at any time, so you can close last month while keeping the current one open. It is assigned to company codes and managed through account-type intervals.

5. What is the difference between FI and CO?

FI is external accounting — legal financial statements for auditors, tax and shareholders. CO is internal accounting — cost centres, internal orders and profitability for management decisions. They reconcile continuously; in S/4HANA both post into the Universal Journal (table ACDOCA), a point worth mentioning to show current knowledge.

Configuration questions: posting keys, document types, field status

6. What is a posting key?

A two-digit key that controls three things on a line item: whether it is a debit or credit, which account type it posts to (customer, vendor, G/L, asset, material), and the field status of the entry screen. Standard examples: 40 G/L debit, 50 G/L credit, 01 customer invoice, 31 vendor invoice.

7. What is a document type, and why does it matter?

A classification key for accounting documents — SA for G/L postings, KR for vendor invoices, DR for customer invoices, and so on. It controls the number range assigned to documents and which account types can be posted with it. It keeps the audit trail organised.

8. Explain field status group.

A field status group, assigned in the G/L account master, decides which fields on the posting screen are suppressed, required or optional — for example forcing a cost centre entry on expense accounts. Groups live inside a field status variant, which is assigned to the company code.

9. What is the reconciliation account?

A G/L account that mirrors subledger postings in the general ledger. When you post a vendor invoice, the vendor subledger updates and the assigned reconciliation account (for example, sundry creditors) updates automatically. You cannot post to it directly — that protects the ledger from mismatch.

10. What are tolerance groups?

They set posting limits — maximum amount per document, per open item, and permitted payment difference — for users and for customer/vendor accounts. Interviewers like this one because it connects configuration to real internal control.

Integration questions: FI-MM and FI-SD

11. Explain FI-MM integration.

The link runs through automatic account determination, configured in transaction OBYC. At goods receipt, stock account is debited and the GR/IR clearing account credited; at invoice verification, GR/IR is debited and the vendor credited. The system finds accounts through the valuation class in the material master plus the movement type. If you can narrate this flow calmly, you are ahead of most freshers.

12. Explain FI-SD integration.

When billing documents post in SD, account determination (transaction VKOA) uses condition technique — typically chart of accounts, sales organisation, account assignment groups of customer and material, and account key — to find the revenue account. The accounting document debits the customer and credits revenue automatically.

13. What is the GR/IR account and why is it needed?

Goods receipt/invoice receipt is a clearing account that bridges the timing gap between receiving goods and receiving the invoice. It should trend toward zero; month-end analysis of uncleared GR/IR items is a classic support task, so mentioning that shows practical awareness.

Scenario questions interviewers use to separate candidates

14. A user posted a vendor invoice to the wrong expense account. What do you do?

If the document is in an open period, reverse it (FB08) with an appropriate reversal reason and repost correctly; if the period is closed, reverse in the current period. Walk through checking the document first (FB03) — interviewers want to see that you verify before you fix.

15. The month-end close is blocked because depreciation has not run. What is the sequence?

Explain the ordering: depreciation run (AFAB) must complete for the period before FI period close; check the run log for errors on individual assets, fix master data or posting errors, rerun in restart mode, then close the period. Precision about sequence matters more than transaction codes.

16. Business wants a new expense G/L account. What do you check before creating it?

Whether an existing account already serves the purpose (avoid chart clutter), the correct account group and number range, field status group, cost element requirements in CO, and whether the group chart of accounts mapping is affected. This answer shows governance thinking, which teams value highly in juniors.

How to answer as a fresher: the honest playbook

Three habits carry freshers through FICO interviews. First, structure: answer concept questions in the order definition → where it is configured → a concrete example. Second, honesty: if you have not touched an area, say “I have not configured that, but my understanding is…” — interviewers forgive gaps, not bluffing. Third, evidence: mention the practice server, the postings you made and any project scenario from training; specifics make you memorable.

Prepare a ninety-second training story before you walk in: which areas you configured on the practice server, one problem you hit and how you resolved it, and which topic you found genuinely interesting and read beyond the syllabus for. Panels almost always open with “tell me about your SAP learning”, and a crisp, concrete story sets the tone for every question that follows. Rehearse it aloud — twice is enough — so it sounds natural rather than recited.

Where you trained also comes up, so be ready to describe live classes, server access and practitioner trainers rather than recorded videos. That is precisely how we run the SAP FICO course at Cokonet, and our placements team runs mock interviews built from this exact question bank before learners face the real thing. If cost is part of your decision, our breakdown of SAP course fees in Kerala explains what actually drives pricing — exact fees are shared in a free counselling call.

Frequently asked questions

What questions are asked in an SAP FICO interview for freshers?

Mostly fundamentals: company code, chart of accounts, fiscal year variant, posting keys, document types, field status groups, and the FI-MM and FI-SD integration flow. Scenario questions test whether you can apply these rather than recite them.

Is SAP FICO hard to crack for a fresher?

No, if you have practised on a real server. Interviewers expect concept clarity and honest reasoning from freshers, not project war stories. Candidates fail when they memorise definitions without ever posting a document themselves.

What is the most important topic in SAP FICO interviews?

Integration. The FI-MM flow at goods receipt and invoice verification, and the FI-SD flow at billing, appear in almost every interview because they show whether you understand how finance connects to the rest of SAP.

Do SAP FICO interviews include practical tests?

Sometimes. Larger consultancies may ask you to walk through a posting or configuration step on screen, or describe the exact menu path. Server practice during training is the only reliable preparation for this.

How should a fresher answer scenario questions?

State the principle, then walk the document flow step by step, and say honestly where you would check the system or ask a senior. Structured reasoning beats a memorised answer every time.

Is SAP FICO a good career in 2026?

Yes. Every company closes books, and S/4HANA migrations have kept demand for FI-trained people steady in India and the Gulf. Commerce graduates in particular find it a natural specialisation.

How long should I prepare for an SAP FICO interview?

After a 2–3 month course, two to three weeks of focused revision is usually enough: rebuild the core configuration once on your practice server, rehearse the integration flows aloud, and prepare your training story.
