What the job actually involves

An SAP FICO consultant makes the finance function of a business work inside SAP. In practice that splits into three kinds of day.

Configuration. Setting up the chart of accounts, company codes, document types, tax procedures, house banks, asset classes, cost centres and profit centres, and the automatic account determination that decides which ledger account a transaction lands in. This is where the module lives, and it is business logic expressed as settings rather than code.

Investigation. A large part of real FICO work is answering the question of why a number is wrong. A posting went to the wrong account, a reconciliation does not tie, a period close is blocked, an interface dropped a batch. Tracing that back through configuration and master data is the skill nobody teaches explicitly and everybody is hired for.

Conversation. Sitting with a finance team, understanding a process they describe in their own words, and deciding what it looks like in the system. This is why finance backgrounds do so well here, and why an accountant retrains into FICO faster than a programmer does.

Who hires, and for what

Three employers, three different jobs.

Consulting and IT services firms hire FICO consultants for implementation, rollout, upgrade and support projects, usually for clients elsewhere. This is the classic route and it is where structured career ladders exist. In Kerala this means Technopark and Infopark companies, plus remote roles with firms based in the metros.

Companies running SAP as customers hire into their own IT or finance systems teams. The work is support, month end assistance, small enhancements and the occasional project. It is quieter, the hours are usually better, and the system exposure is often deeper than a junior consultant gets. For a first job it is frequently the better option, and in Kerala these roles exist across logistics, exports, retail chains, healthcare and manufacturing.

Shared service centres hire people who understand both the process and the system, for roles that sit between finance operations and IT. This is an underrated entry point for commerce graduates, because the bar is set on process understanding.

Typical fresher titles to search for are associate consultant, SAP FICO support analyst, SAP finance analyst and ERP support executive. Not all of them have SAP in the title, which is why searching only for consultant misses a lot of the market.

The ladder, year by year

Estimated ranges, not offers

Our published SAP FICO salary guide sets out the progression as estimates for India generally: junior consultant Rs 4-7 L in the first year, consultant Rs 8-12 L by years two to three, senior consultant Rs 13-20 L by years three to five, then lead roles, with finance solution architect at Rs 30-45 L at the top of the published ladder.

What changes at each step is less about the configuration and more about scope. A junior fixes what is broken. A consultant owns a sub area and designs within it. A senior owns the finance design for a workstream and argues for it with the client. A lead owns the integration between finance and everything else, which is where SAP gets genuinely difficult. An architect decides what the landscape should look like at all.

The step people find hardest is from consultant to senior, because it is the point where technical competence stops being sufficient and you have to be able to say no to a client and explain why.

Where to specialise once you are established

FICO is broad, and after two or three years the people who progress fastest have gone deep somewhere specific.

Product costing and controlling. The hardest area in the module, consistently short of good people, and the fastest route to senior work. It sits between finance and production, so it needs an understanding of manufacturing as well as accounting.

S/4HANA finance and the universal journal. Migration and conversion projects need people who understand what changed and why, and there are more of these projects than there are people who have done one.

Treasury, tax and country specific compliance. Narrow, technical, and valuable precisely because it is unglamorous.

The integration seam. Understanding how MM and SD postings become finance documents makes you the person who can actually solve cross module problems. It is also why FICO and SAP MM is the most common and most useful second module combination.

Whichever you choose, choose one. The generalist FICO consultant with six years of shallow experience is the most common stuck profile in this field.

Getting the first one

Four things matter disproportionately when you have no project history.

Certification. The SAP associate exam for financial accounting is booked and paid directly with SAP and carries a verifiable ID. It matters most at exactly this stage, because it is the only external signal you have.

A resume written in module keywords. Recruiters screen by term. New general ledger, asset accounting, accounts payable, automatic account determination, S/4HANA. If your resume says ERP consultant it will not be found.

Something you can talk through end to end. One configuration you built yourself, from company code to a posted document, that you can explain including the mistakes you made. This beats any amount of syllabus recitation in an interview.

Willingness to start in support. It is the normal entry point and it is a better education than a junior implementation seat, because production systems break in ways no classroom reproduces. What that period does to a career is covered in our guide to SAP jobs in Kerala.
