SAP ABAP pay in India follows a reasonably predictable ladder. The steps are wide because the spread inside each one is real, not because the data is vague. Below is the same ladder Cokonet publishes on its salary guide, so the two pages do not contradict each other.

Two notes on reading a table like this. First, these are annual base CTC figures, which is what an Indian offer letter quotes. Take-home is lower once employer contributions, variable pay and tax come out, and the variable component grows as a share of the package the further up the ladder you go. Second, the bands overlap on purpose. A strong developer in year three is regularly paid more than a coasting one in year five, because the market prices what you can do rather than how long you have been doing it.

Of those six, debugging is the one candidates most consistently underestimate. Interviewers use it because it cannot be revised the night before. Being asked how you would trace why a custom pricing routine is not firing, or how you would find the exit that lets you block a goods issue, tells the interviewer in three minutes whether you have actually worked in a system or only in a classroom.

That is a wide band for a single starting role, and the width is the whole story: the top of it and the bottom of it are two very different candidates.
Four things decide where you sit inside it. Your base degree matters a little, in that a BTech, MCA, BCA or BSc computer science background reassures an employer that you can be handed a specification. Certification matters more for a fresher than at any later point, because it is the only external evidence a recruiter can verify. What matters most is portfolio: programs you wrote, a data migration you actually ran, an ALV report with a genuine selection screen and error handling, an enhancement you implemented and can explain. And finally the employer type, since a staffing firm places you fast at the bottom of the band while an implementation partner takes longer and starts you higher.
Being blunt about it: a fresher holding a certificate and nothing else is at the floor of that band, and sometimes below it on a trainee arrangement for the first few months. The jump comes at the end of the first real project. Once you have touched a live system, handled a cutover, fixed something in production and can talk about it, you are no longer competing with other freshers. That single transition is the steepest percentage rise in the whole ABAP career, which is why the years two to three step in the table above is so much wider than the first.
ABAP is not one skill with one price. It is a set of related skills that the market values very differently, and the difference has widened as S/4HANA conversion programmes have moved from planning into delivery.

The honest reading is that classical ABAP is the entry ticket and modern ABAP is the raise. Nobody is going to hire a developer who cannot write an internal table loop or read a data dictionary structure, so the classical layer is not optional. But if your CV lists only reports, forms and BDC, you are competing in the most crowded part of the market, and years alone will not move you out of it. Adding CDS and RAP is the change that moves a developer a band, and it moves it faster than waiting.
There is a second premium worth naming: performance. ABAP on HANA rewards code pushdown, and a developer who can take a report that runs for forty minutes, move the aggregation into a CDS view and bring it back in seconds is doing work that is visible to the business. Those are the developers who get named in project reviews.
SAP careers split into two broad routes and it is worth being clear which one this article is about. The functional route, modules such as FICO, MM, SD or SuccessFactors, is configuration and business process work. It suits commerce, BBA, MBA, accounting and operations backgrounds, because your existing domain knowledge does real work for you from day one. The technical route is programming, and ABAP is its main language.
So ABAP suits you if you already like writing code, if debugging something stubborn is satisfying rather than draining, and if you would rather own a piece of logic than own a process design. Computer science and engineering graduates convert into it quickly. People from a non-technical degree can absolutely do it, but they should be honest with themselves that the day job is development, not meetings about business requirements.
The trade-off is worth stating plainly. ABAP is a narrower market than mainstream web development, because it only exists inside organisations that run SAP. That narrowness is exactly why it pays what it does: the supply of developers is limited by the same thing that limits demand, and the installed base is large, old and being converted. It is a protected niche rather than a crowded one.

Location changes an ABAP offer more than most candidates expect, and it changes it in a way that is easy to describe without inventing figures. Within any of the bands in the table above, a Kerala offer tends to sit in the lower half and a Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai or Mumbai offer in the upper half, because that is where the large implementation partners concentrate their SAP delivery teams.
In Kerala the realistic picture is this. Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram and Infopark in Kochi both host companies with SAP work, including captive teams at larger employers and offshore delivery for overseas customers. That work exists and it is a legitimate first job. What Kerala has fewer of is deep, continuous implementation programmes with several parallel workstreams, which is what accelerates a developer fastest. Many Kerala ABAP careers therefore run as: first role locally or remotely, two or three years of real objects, then either a metro move, a Gulf move or a remote role with an overseas customer.
The Gulf deserves a separate mention because it is a genuine route for Kerala candidates rather than a theoretical one. Employers in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman run large SAP landscapes and hire Indian technical consultants steadily. Packages there are set by that local market and structured differently, often with housing and travel components, so comparing them directly to an Indian CTC figure is misleading. The durable benefit is not the package while you are there, it is the implementation exposure you bring back.
Remote work has quietly changed this too. A meaningful share of ABAP development is now done for customers the developer has never physically visited, which means a candidate in Kochi or Kollam can compete for work priced closer to metro rates. What that requires is a CV that survives a technical screen conducted entirely over a call, which loops back to the same thing: demonstrable objects, not a list of topics attended.
