First, the stream myth: science is not a gate
The biggest misconception families carry into this decision is that IT is reserved for science students. It is not. Engineering degrees have stream requirements; the IT industry mostly does not. Commerce students become data analysts and SAP consultants every year. Humanities students become UI/UX designers, digital marketers and content-side product people. What employers actually screen for is demonstrated skill — a portfolio, a project, an internship — and none of that depends on which stream you took at 16.
So if you took commerce or humanities and feel the IT door closed, it did not. Choose by interest, not by hype
Ignore whichever course is loudest on social media this month and start from what you actually enjoy:
- You like building and problem-solving → Python full stack development. You learn to build complete web applications — front end, back end and database — which is the broadest and most portfolio-friendly coding entry point.
- You like numbers and patterns → data analytics. Excel, SQL, Python and dashboards, applied to business questions. Strong fit for students who liked maths or accounts without wanting hardcore programming.
- You like business and organisation → SAP functional tracks or digital marketing. Both sit at the business end of IT: SAP runs the operations of large companies, and digital marketing runs their growth.
- You are creative → UI/UX design or AI filmmaking, where design sense and storytelling matter more than syntax.

A simple self-test if you are unsure: spend one weekend on a free introduction to each of your top two options — a beginner Python tutorial versus a spreadsheet analysis exercise, say — and notice which one you kept going back to after the first hour of frustration. Every track has that first hour; the one where you pushed through it anyway is usually your answer. Counsellors can shortlist for you, but only that felt pull tells you which course you will still be attending in month four.
Degree vs skill course: the honest answer
You will hear two extreme claims: "a degree is useless now" and "a skill course is just tuition." Both are wrong. The honest picture in 2026: many IT employers, especially startups and mid-size companies, genuinely hire on demonstrated skill — but large companies still run degree filters in recruitment software, and government jobs, higher studies and several overseas visa routes still require one.
So for most 17-year-olds the answer is not either/or, it is sequencing: enrol in a degree in any stream you can sustain, and do a serious skill course alongside it — evening, weekend or online batches exist precisely for this. Three years later you hold both the eligibility ticket and the job-ready skill, while classmates who did only the degree start their skill-building after graduation. The only students who should consider skill-course-only paths are those with real financial constraints — and even then, a distance or open degree alongside work keeps future doors open cheaply.
What about students set on engineering or BCA? The same logic applies, just softer: the degree gives you fundamentals, but campus placements still reward the students who added a practical specialisation and projects on top of the syllabus. The skill course is not a substitute for their degree — it is the multiplier on it.
Realistic timelines: what the first year looks like
Be suspicious of anyone promising a job in eight weeks. A realistic arc looks like this: months 1–4, the structured course itself — most focused skill courses run 3 to 6 months of live classes with lab practice. Months 4–7, portfolio building: two or three projects you can demonstrate and explain, because interviews test what you can show, not what certificate you hold. Roughly nine to twelve months from starting to first salary is the honest median for a committed student. Some move faster; many move slower because they skip the portfolio and internship stages and discover interviews punish that. Plan the full year and anything quicker is a bonus.
If you are combining the course with a degree, stretch the same arc across a longer runway: skill course in first or second year, portfolio through the middle years, internships in the vacations, and you arrive at final-year placements with two years of evidence while the timeline pressure disappears entirely. This is the single biggest structural advantage of starting early — 12th-pass students have time, and time is exactly what portfolios and internships need.
Five mistakes that cost students a year
- Choosing by placement advertisements. Guaranteed-job claims are a marketing device. Real institutes offer structured placement support — training, mock interviews, employer connections — and are honest that the outcome depends on you. - Collecting certificates instead of building projects. Five online certificates lose to one working project in almost every interview.
- Following a friend into their course. Their interest is not your interest, and drop-out is the expensive outcome.
- Dropping the degree impulsively. As above — sequencing beats abandoning.
- Waiting for the "perfect" course. Students lose six months comparing endlessly. Take a counselling call, pick the fit, and start; momentum compounds.
Notice the common thread: every one of these mistakes replaces evidence with shortcuts. The students who reach jobs are not the ones who found a secret course — they are the ones who picked a reasonable fit, finished it, built things and showed up to interviews with proof. Boring, repeatable, and it works.
For parents: how to actually help
Parents usually ask two questions: is this safe, and is this real? Fair questions — the training market has enough exaggeration to earn the scepticism. Here is a practical filter. Visit the institute or join a demo class. Ask who teaches: practitioner trainers with industry experience, or fresh graduates reading slides? Ask exactly what "placement" means and insist on the honest answer — structured support, not a guarantee. Check independent reviews, longevity and corporate partnerships rather than posters.
And one request from sixteen years of counselling students: let interest lead. A child pushed into coding who belongs in design, or into science who belongs in business, pays for that redirection in years. The IT industry is now wide enough — analytical, technical, creative and business tracks — that there is a genuine seat for almost every aptitude. Your job is to fund the fit, verify the institute, and then back your child's effort for the twelve months it honestly takes.
