SAP ABAP vs SAP ABAP Advanced: two courses, not two halves of one
SAP ABAP and SAP ABAP Advanced are two separate courses at Cokonet Academy in Kerala, taught in classrooms in Trivandrum and Kochi and live online, and the most common mistake is treating the second as a continuation of the first. They have separate syllabi, audiences and outcomes, and either can be the right place to start.
The naming suggests a ladder. In practice the distinction is closer to two different jobs. One teaches you to build inside the classic ABAP application server, which most SAP landscapes still run. The other teaches the modern development model that S/4HANA and SAP BTP projects are written in. Both are real markets, which is why they are two courses.

What SAP ABAP covers and who it is for
Quick answer: SAP ABAP is the foundation course. It teaches the language and the classic toolset to someone with programming aptitude who has not yet worked inside SAP, typically a BTech, BCA or MCA graduate, or a developer from another stack.
The centre of the course is how SAP models data and how classic programs are built around it:
- ABAP Data Dictionary: domains, data elements, transparent tables, views, search helps and lock objects
- Internal tables and performance basics: table types, reads, loops and staying inside runtime limits
- Reports: classical and interactive reports with selection screens, then ALV grids
- Module pool programming: custom transaction screens with flow logic
- Forms: SmartForms and Adobe Forms for invoices and other printed output
- Data migration: BDC-style batch data transfer for legacy data
- Enhancements: user exits, BAdIs and the enhancement framework
- Interfaces: BAPIs, RFCs and IDocs, which let SAP talk to everything else
- Debugging: the classic debugger, runtime analysis and reading someone else's code
You come out able to read an existing custom program in a client landscape and change it without breaking it, which is what almost every first ABAP job asks for. There is no shortcut around the dictionary and the classic runtime.
What SAP ABAP Advanced covers and who it is for
Quick answer: SAP ABAP Advanced is for a developer who already writes ABAP and needs the modern S/4HANA stack: people in an SAP development or support role, and experienced developers being moved onto an S/4HANA programme.
Where classic ABAP pulls data up to the application server and loops over it, modern ABAP pushes that work down to the HANA database and exposes the result as a service:
- ABAP Objects (ABAP OO): classes, interfaces, inheritance and exceptions, taken seriously
- Core Data Services (CDS views): the modelling layer with annotations, associations and access control
- AMDP and code pushdown: ABAP Managed Database Procedures that let HANA do the heavy lifting
- ABAP RESTful Application Programming Model (RAP): behaviour definitions, validations, determinations and actions for new transactional apps
- OData and Fiori exposure: publishing CDS and RAP services as OData for SAP Fiori apps
- ABAP Cloud and clean core: released APIs and extension points that keep custom code upgrade-safe
- Eclipse ADT: the ABAP Development Tools used for modern development
- ABAP Unit: test classes, test doubles and the modern debugging workflow
This is a separate course rather than an extra week because it is a genuine change of mental model: efficient classic ABAP and correct CDS-driven ABAP need different instincts. The SAP ABAP Advanced course is built around SAP's current ABAP for S/4HANA developer certification, so the topics line up with the exam and with project work.

Which one should you take first?
Quick answer: The test is not how long you have worked but what you can already do. If you have never written a line of ABAP, start with SAP ABAP. If you already work in an ABAP environment and are being asked about CDS views, OData or Fiori, go to SAP ABAP Advanced.
By background:
- Fresher with a BTech, BCA, MCA or BSc: SAP ABAP, without exception. You need the dictionary and the classic runtime before the advanced course will make sense. Our SAP ABAP course guide for freshers covers eligibility and the first-job route.
- Developer from another stack (Java, .NET, Python, web): SAP ABAP. You will move through the language quickly, but the dictionary, the SAP data model and the enhancement framework are new, and interviews test those.
- Existing ABAP developer on ECC or classic S/4HANA work: SAP ABAP Advanced. What you are missing is CDS, RAP, ABAP Cloud and ADT, the gaps migration teams are hiring to fill.
- Functional consultant (FICO, MM, SD) who wants to read and debug code: SAP ABAP, usually in a weekend batch.
- Support engineer who reads ABAP but rarely writes it: the grey area, worth a conversation rather than a guess.
A quick self-check: can you build a transparent table and a search help without looking it up? Do you know why a CDS view is not simply a database view? Have you exposed anything as an OData service? One yes means the foundation course; three means the advanced one. A twenty-minute call settles the grey cases.
The learning path: how the two courses fit together
Quick answer: For a development career in SAP, foundation first and advanced later is the strongest position available. The gap between them should contain real work, because the advanced material lands very differently once you have maintained someone else's custom programs.
- Stage 1, SAP ABAP: Build one complete custom development on the training S/4HANA system: a dictionary table, an ALV report, a SmartForm, a BAPI call and one enhancement. That portfolio piece covers most of a first-round technical interview.
- Stage 2, real project exposure: Ideally a year in support or maintenance work, where reading production code and fixing dumps turns the classic model from theory into instinct.
- Stage 3, SAP ABAP Advanced: Rebuild the same scenario the modern way: a CDS data model, a RAP business object, an OData service and a Fiori elements app consuming it, with ABAP Unit tests. Now you can show both versions of one requirement.
Taken back to back with no project experience in between, much of the advanced material is memorised rather than understood. Skills employers test for each course
Quick answer: Classic ABAP interviews test the dictionary, internal tables, reports and enhancements. Modern ABAP interviews test CDS, RAP, OData and clean-core thinking. Both test debugging.
For SAP ABAP graduates:
- Transparent, pooled and cluster tables, and when to use each
- Internal table types and why a sorted or hashed table matters for performance
- Classical versus interactive versus ALV reports
- BAPI versus BAdI versus user exit

Career relevance in Kerala and the Gulf
Quick answer: Classic ABAP skills get you the first job, because most landscapes in Kerala and the Gulf still carry years of custom ECC-era code. Modern ABAP skills get you onto S/4HANA migration projects, where demand is shifting as ECC mainstream maintenance ends in 2027.
SAP has set the end of mainstream maintenance for ECC at the end of 2027, and companies in Kerala, India and the GCC are running or planning S/4HANA migrations to meet it. Those projects contain both worlds: existing custom code has to be moved, and new functionality built in CDS and RAP. Developers who can work in both stacks get put on these projects.
In Kerala, SAP ABAP developers are hired by IT services companies and SAP partners in Kochi (Infopark) and Trivandrum (Technopark), by manufacturers that run their own SAP, and by support centres serving overseas clients.
