SAP MM in Trivandrum: a supply-chain skill in a state that moves goods

Materials Management is the least abstract SAP module to learn in Kerala, because the processes it automates are visible all around you. Purchase requisitions, vendor evaluation, goods receipt, stock transfers between plants, invoice verification against a three-way match — every exporter, hospital and factory in the state does these things, most of them still on spreadsheets and half-built ERPs. Learners who arrive with warehouse, stores, purchase or logistics experience tend to find MM the easiest module to convert into a job, because they can already describe a broken procurement cycle from memory. Freshers take a little longer, mainly on master data discipline and on understanding why an account determination error is really an accounting problem wearing a materials costume.

Who hires for this in and around Trivandrum

The buyers split into three groups. First, the IT services and consulting firms — a handful inside Technopark Kazhakkoottam, more in Infopark Kochi — who staff MM consultants onto client projects abroad. Second, Kerala companies running SAP in their own operations: rubber and latex processors, spice and cashew exporters, seafood exporters shipping out of Kollam and Kochi, cement and building-material firms, large private hospital groups managing pharmacy and consumables stock, and state-sector utilities and boards whose materials wings are the most obvious ERP candidates in the public system. Third, and increasingly, logistics. The deep-water port at Vizhinjam has pulled freight forwarding, container handling and warehousing attention towards the southern end of the state, and organisations in that chain buy inventory and procurement skills. Be clear-eyed about volume, though: Kerala advertises far fewer fresher MM roles than Bengaluru or Chennai in any given quarter. Many of our MM alumni take their first consultant role outside the state, then move back to a Kochi or Technopark project two or three years later.

What the day job actually looks like

• Configuration work: purchasing organisations, document types, release strategies, pricing procedures, valuation classes and the account determination that quietly links MM to finance.
• Master data: material master views, vendor master, info records, source lists — unglamorous, and the source of most real support tickets.
• Support and enhancement: sitting on a ticket queue for a live client, reproducing an issue, and knowing when the answer is configuration and when it needs an ABAP developer.
• Rollout and testing: writing test scripts, running integration cycles with SD and FICO counterparts, and handling user training in plain language.
